Some Weird Feelings.

At the behest of a close associate I recently bought Two Guinea Pigs and One fluffy white Rabbit.

The Rabbit is quite expressive with his feelings, the Guinea Pigs seem to keep to themselves and withhold affection. The Rabbit runs around my feet and loves cuddling up to my feet.

Ever since I have acquired them, I feel this intense urge to make them happy all the time. I do all I can to make them happy, I have them fed, cleaned, everything I can think of, I have done for them.

This feeling is quite weird. I have felt it for only a few people in my life let alone pets.

Its quite wonderful and weird at the same time.

Have you felt this weird feeling for pets, if so how do you make them feel good 24x7?

P.S : With people it is very simple. I can always tell if they are happy and If they are not I always know how to make them happy.

Regards,
Mav.

i have, and have always had dogs.

i train my dog (for my amusement not theirs, and to make them useful.)

Rufio, my almost 8 year old German Shepherd Dog, seems "happy". he responds to commands. he asks when he has a need (food, outside, water...). he alerts me to perceived danger. he would kill and die for me.

i have never stopped to question his happiness.

it is an interesting question.

According to Fred Metzger, a guest lecturer in animal sciences at Penn State and a State College veterinarian, “Dogs probably don’t feel love in the typical way humans do. Dogs make investments in human beings because it works for them. They stand something to gain from putting so-called emotions out there. The more ‘cute factor’ they give us, the more we feel like they love us. This makes it more likely that we will give them more attention, food treats, outdoor access — all based on how much of a show they put on for us.” Metzger theorized that dogs “love” us as long as we continue to reward their tricks and antics with treats and attention.

Dogs are pack animals. they need to be in a pack. we are the pack. but... i would be willing to bet... left to their own devices... they would behave like a "dog"!

my one dog... Rufio, is called ... Rufio.

smiles. oh my.

he does many "tricks" most intended to be useful to me, although some are a lark.

he can turn on or off a light switch. "switch" is the command, although he has been known to do it on his own.

he can get a beer from a cooler (wont let him in the 'fridge)

he can throw the empty in the recycle bin. (hehe... well...) again, he has been known to do this on his own, occasionally not waiting till it is empty.

he "goes" on command. convenient for clean up. he can "go" on a plastic bag, then dispose of it.

he has saved my life. many times he has prevented a situation that might lead to having to save my life.

his instincts seem sound. when out (at night especially), if he is "worried" there is reason.

he travels with me everywhere.

i can "turn on" commands for others. (tell him it is ok to listen to someone else). i can also turn it off... very useful. (i can make people feel they have control and that he likes them... and... smiles, only them. it is fun to let a kid control him and not the parent or something like that... hehe)

i can tell him "protect" and no one can come within a 4 foot range. then "by" and a certain one can enter... another useful "trick"... (lots of interesting uses!)

once he understood "learning" it was just a matter of giving him something to learn.
